Digital imageSt. Luke in the Fields Blog: What is your favorite Lenten practice and why?

Garth Wingfield: I’ll admit I’ve had a very hard time trying to keep a Lenten practice over the last few years. At first, it seemed to me that it had to be super austere, and that seemed hugely daunting. But in the last few years, I’ve tried to “take something up,” although to varying degrees of success. I’ve tried daily centering prayer (which worked wonderfully for the first couple of weeks that first year I tried). This year, I’m saying daily prayer  — evening prayer or compline. It’s really something I wish I did every day all year long, so it seems like a good Lenten practice, in the sense that I’m practicing something I’d like introduce into my life every day. Even if it’s five minutes right before I go to sleep, it helps ground me and bring me back to what matters most.

Actually, just seeing my Book of Common Prayer on my bedside table is a comforting sight. I don’t plan to put it away after Lent.
